Mark Zuckerberg: ‘Meta Made Mistakes in Workforce Transition’

In an internal memo collected by Reuters this week, Mark Zuckerberg described the rapid progress of AI and the challenges posed by this technology. “Due to the complexity of these changes, we have made mistakes and will almost certainly make more,” Zuckerberg told employees. He also mentioned that he is “focused on providing the greatest stability possible” with upcoming organizational changes.

“I don’t want to make too many promises because the world is changing in ways that are beyond our control,” Zuckerberg shared, while reiterating that Meta does not plan to conduct any more large-scale layoffs this year.

The company will also strive to find new roles for employees who were reassigned to train AI models after a major restructuring in May. At that time, Meta laid off 10% of its global workforce and shifted 7,000 employees to new AI-related projects.

“When creating new important roles for people, we can streamline the size of teams. If we make mistakes somewhere, we can reassign some people back to their old positions,” Zuckerberg said.

According to the internal memo, Meta plans to increase investment in team building, including raising budgets for trips and events, and organizing a large-scale hackathon in July to promote collaboration between teams and build new models.

Zuckerberg noted that Meta is also acknowledging concerns related to expanding managerial oversight responsibilities and intends to scale back. According to sources, Meta’s new Applied AI Engineering division has a “flat structure” with fewer middle layers, with each manager overseeing up to 50 employees.

According to Reuters, Zuckerberg is investing hundreds of billions of dollars into AI to restructure Meta’s internal operations to align with this technology. This is also a common trend among many large companies in the U.S. this year, particularly in the tech sector.

A survey by consulting firm Mercer last month indicated that most business leaders want to restructure to integrate AI, resulting in job cuts. Tom’s Hardware reported that the survey involved 12,000 participants, including 9,250 employees, 1,650 HR managers, 825 senior business leaders, and 100 investors.

Accordingly, as many as 98% of senior leaders reported planning structural changes in their companies, while 99% predicted that AI would lead to layoffs in the next two years. The majority of leaders also believe that redesigning jobs to integrate AI and automation will yield the highest profits, while only 32% assess that their workforce can optimally combine the capabilities of humans and machines.
