Vietnam – Australia announce joint research funding program 2026 – VnExpress Newspaper
The program was announced on June 16 in Hanoi, within the framework of the Vietnam – Australia Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation Initiative (AVSTICI), organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam in coordination with the Department of Industry, Science and Resources of Australia.
The 2026 funding round focuses on three priority areas: new and renewable energy technologies, sustainable marine economy, and recycling and waste management. On the Vietnamese side, the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED) will be the focal point for implementing, coordinating, and managing the program.

According to Australia’s Chief Scientist Tony Haymet, the country is particularly interested in how Vietnam identifies national priorities in science, technology, and innovation, and develops high-performance computing infrastructure, supercomputers, and AI. These are areas where Australia is also building investment strategies.
Clearly defining strategic priorities, while expanding cooperation with like-minded partners, will contribute to enhancing the scientific, technological, and innovation capabilities of both nations, Mr. Tony Haymet said.
NAFOSTED Director Dao Ngoc Chien stated that the program is a concrete step to implement the scientific and technological cooperation commitments between Vietnam and Australia. According to him, this mechanism will create a premise for the two sides to expand cooperation on AI, computing infrastructure, and new technologies. NAFOSTED’s funding scale and capacity will therefore expand in the future, promoting larger-scale international research and bringing about substantive impacts.
