Giant Crane Over 241 Meters Tall Installed for Wind Turbines
According to Interesting Engineering, the massive LW3600-240NB tower crane from Zoomlion is specially designed for the next generation of super-tall wind turbines. The company states that the machine can lift up to 240 tons and reach heights of over 241 meters, allowing for the installation of some of the largest onshore wind turbines. The crane’s lifting capacity is equivalent to raising 200 small cars to the top of an 80-story building.
The wind energy industry continues to increase turbine sizes to capture more energy and enhance the economic efficiency of projects. Currently, onshore turbines often have hub heights of over 150 meters, with several new generation turbine models approaching the 200-meter mark.
According to CPG, larger turbines generate more electricity but also pose several challenges. The transportation and assembly of blades, turbine nacelles, and tower sections weighing hundreds of tons require increasingly specialized lifting equipment. Traditional crawler cranes can perform this work but require large assembly areas and extended setup times.

According to Zoomlion, the LW3600-240NB targets the large-scale wind power market with ultra-tall towers. One of the main advantages of the equipment is its relatively small installation area, requiring only a 35 x 55 meter operating space and a ground bearing capacity (maximum load-bearing ability of the ground without damage or excessive settlement) of 0.18 MPa, helping to reduce site preparation requirements. This crane can support the installation of wind turbines with a capacity of over 10 megawatts and hub heights above 200 meters, a segment expected to expand in the future.
At heights above 200 meters, strong winds can exert significant pressure on both the crane structure and the lifted components. To ensure stable operation, Zoomlion’s tower crane employs a low-load ratio design and high-strength clamping rings to enhance wind resistance and stability. The system can withstand wind speeds of level 10 on the Beaufort scale (equivalent to 89-102 km/h). Other features include dual-cylinder synchronous lifting technology to improve safety and an intelligent digital control system that monitors operations throughout the crane’s lifecycle.
